Most employees are not fully committed to their work – only 15% globally and 33% in the US are committed in this way, Gallup research shows. To find out what has derailed the commitment of so many, executives should examine the behaviour of their highly committed employees: What do they do that the others don’t?
Gallup, no stranger to the commitment theme, notes that there are several behaviours that are unique to highly committed employees, including the following:
- Despite challenges and obstacles, the committed don’t often let problems become an excuse for inaction or fatally undermine their performance.
- They look for ways to optimise their work, which means focusing on their strengths and not spending too much time doing what doesn’t come naturally to them.
- They bring intention to their commitment. They have a plan and independently and proactively try to enhance their commitment rather than expecting someone else to do it for them.
- They take responsibility for their performance instead of blaming others when things don’t go their way.
